CONTACT JEFF STRATTON, EMT AT THE ACCIDENT SCENE

On 3/18/99 I contacted Stratton at 739-7558. Stratton had contacted us because he had seen the reward advertisement in the local newspaper.

Stratton was hesitant to talk about his knowledge of the accident scene because he did not want to breach the confidentiality associated with his profession. He was concerned about having a conversation about the subject at all without consulting his supervisor. He recalled that the roads were very slick that night in December 1992; in fact he fell down as he was exiting the ambulance as he arrived at the scene.

He stated that Alan John knocked out the extended cab window of the Yearsley pickup truck on the passenger side. John hoisted Stratton into the vehicle through this small window behind the passenger seat of the pickup. Stratton confirmed that they could not get the passenger door open and that is why he had to go through that window in the extended cab. Stratton recalled two occupants in the pickup truck when he was entering the cab but he could not comment on their identities.

Investigator Bontecou faxed Stratton copies of the EMT reports that BIS had in our files, 739.7549. Stratton returned a call and spoke with Bontecou. Stratton was still reluctant at this time to divulge his knowledge of the medical facts or anything having to do with those involved in the accident.

Stratton indicated that BIS probably did not receive the EMT reports with his name on them because the records that were requested were the ones involving Ollie Sutherland and Conley Lane. Stratton noted that Steven Poole was the only EMT who attended to Sutherland and Lane; therefore, Stratton's name would not have been in those records. Stratton only attended to those occupants of the pickup truck.

Stratton claimed to have no information about the identity of the driver of the pickup. At the accident scene, he did recall hearing something about a vial of cocaine and some cash that was associated with the pickup truck and its occupants. He stated that he did not know any more detail about the cocaine or cash. He recalled that the next day, the senior EMT asked him if he saw any cash in the pickup truck the night before. Stratton stated that he had not seen any cash in the pickup. He could not recall any more detail about the accident scene and he declined to comment on what he could remember about those occupants that he treated medically. Stratton stated that the following Saturday there was an EMT Extrication Class in the vehicle impound yard in the Town of Jackson. He recalled that the Yearsley's pickup truck was still there at this time, and he remembered seeing civilians, non-official personnel in the cab of the pickup truck.

There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.
